Half Step Bar

Half Step Bar is a 500-capacity Austin room built around a restored blue bungalow on Rainey Street. Its distinction is the split personality: a polished cocktail bar inside, then a patio performance space outside, where a crowd can settle at picnic tables or gather around the stage. A published event guide lists the room at 500 guests, putting it in the small-to-mid-size range for a district whose historic houses became nightlife spaces.

A bungalow remade for cocktails

Half Step opened in 2014 under Chris Bostick, whose partners included Eric Alperin, Cedd Moses, Sasha Petraske, and Eric Needleman. Eater described the arrival as an elevated cocktail bar amid Rainey’s party circuit; Bostick brought experience from Los Angeles bar the Varnish. The project transformed a worn-down house: Time Out reports that the structure was gutted and restored, then finished with tea-stained wallpaper and booth seating that recalls church pews.

A clear early marker came in May 2017, when Esquire included Half Step in its Best Bars in America list. Eater’s report credited the bar’s detail-driven drink program, from fresh ingredients to hand-carved ice, and described the name as a nod to the Grateful Dead song. That recognition helps explain the venue’s concert-bar character: the music operates alongside a cocktail program with its own point of view.

The room today

Half Step’s current setup supports both public music and event rentals. The official site routes visitors to Music & Events and Book Event, while its event-booking listing offers live-music coordination, semi-private groups of 20–80, and bar or patio buyouts for 80–300. The calendar mix spans electronic, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, indie, pop, folk, and country, with DJ nights alongside bands. Inside, expect a compact bar-and-stage arrangement; outside, the larger patio adds an outdoor bar, a second stage, picnic seating, food trucks, and yard games. Sightlines favor arriving early and claiming a patio table or a spot near the stage.
