Guero's Taco Bar

Güero’s Taco Bar is an Austin venue whose published capacity is unavailable, with performances centered on the Oak Garden Stage behind the South Congress restaurant. Its defining feature is specific: an outdoor stage beneath century-old oaks at the former Central Feed and Seed site, with food and drinks in reach through the set. This is a patio concert setting built for a meal, a margarita and local music in the same stop.

A feed store becomes a stage-side cantina

Rob and Cathy Lippincott opened Güero’s on East Oltorf in 1986, drawing on Mexican street-food inspiration. Central Feed and Seed closed in 1993; two years later, the couple bought its South Congress building to expand their taqueria. The conversion carried real neighborhood friction: the Austin Chronicle recorded opposition from East Congress neighbors when the Lippincotts proposed buying and renovating the old store, then named Güero’s a 1995 “Best Resurrection of an Austin Landmark” pick. That preservation-and-conversion story remains the venue’s sharpest credential. Rob Lippincott died on November 5, 2022; Eater reported that daughters Lyle and Bette, already in leadership roles, would continue operating the family business.

What the Oak Garden offers now

Live music runs Wednesday through Sunday, and Güero’s directs artist and music-booking inquiries through its official booking contact. The programming is broad and local-facing, with country, indie, folk, Latin, rock, R&B, jazz and alternative on the venue’s current slate. Physically, this is an open-air garden with a small stage, tables under the oak canopy, and a full bar serving the music area.
