Elephant Room

Elephant Room is a downtown Austin basement jazz bar with capacity unlisted by the venue and live music seven nights a week. Its distinguishing detail sits beneath the music: the room occupies the historic Swift Building basement, a space connected to the excavation that uncovered major mastodon remains next door. That origin gave the club its name, while the current operation keeps the emphasis on local players, drinks, and close-range sets.

A basement with bones in its past

Elephant Room opened in 1991 in the basement of the Swift Building, an Early Commercial structure dating to about 1905. Before the club arrived, the basement had been vacated after use as a holding tank for the adjacent development. During excavation for that neighboring high-rise’s parking garage, workers found mastodon bones described by the venue and Austin tourism sources as the largest archaeological discovery of its kind west of the Mississippi; once the bones went to the Dell Children’s Museum, the empty basement became Elephant Room.

The sharpest interruption came during the pandemic. FOX 7 reported that the club closed in March 2020, reopened on June 22, 2021, then shut again on July 7 after four employees and a band member contracted COVID-19. The episode places the room’s present nightly schedule in a venue history shaped by a particularly fragile period for small indoor stages.

How the room works now

Expect a jazz-first calendar built around local musicians, recurring bands, and jam-session culture; the venue advertises live music every night and routes booking inquiries through its listed booking contact. Seating is first come, first served, with reservations unavailable. For focused listening, the club recommends tables near the stage; seats by the entrance suit conversation. The space has exposed wood, brick, and concrete, a herringbone brick floor, concrete columns dividing the room, and a bar opposite an exposed-brick wall, with the stage at the far end.
