About ACL Live at The Moody Theater
ACL Live at The Moody Theater is a 2,750-capacity room in downtown Austin, built as both a concert hall and a high-definition television studio. Its defining feature is that dual role: regular touring shows use the same stage as PBS’s Austin City Limits tapings. The room is arranged across three levels, yet every seat falls within 75 feet of the stage, giving a large-capacity theater a deliberately close-range feel.
A purpose-built move downtown
The venue opened in February 2011 as part of the Block 21 development, giving Austin City Limits a purpose-built downtown home after 36 years in Studio 6A at the University of Texas. Austin PBS, then KLRU, moved the program into a full-time music venue with a production system connected directly to the station, expanding the audience and creating a room available for touring concerts between tapings.
Its opening month supplied a concise statement of purpose. After a February 10 family-show soft opening, Willie Nelson played an early concert backed by a 55-piece orchestra; the first Austin City Limits taping followed on February 26 with the Steve Miller Band. The sequence linked the new building to the television series’ past while establishing a far larger hall for Austin’s indoor concert circuit.
The room today
ACL Live books modern headliners alongside Austin City Limits tapings, with a calendar that spans country, folk, rock, alternative, pop, R&B, Latin and electronic shows. Floor setups can shift between 1,000-person general admission and 800 reserved seats, while the mezzanine adds premium theater seating and suites. Ten bars serve the venue’s three levels, and the broadcast-grade acoustics suit detailed singer-songwriter sets as readily as full-volume band shows.
