The pairing makes a useful weekend thread: first, the band’s established live identity in a full set; then, its place within an evening shaped around intergenerational exchange, family histories and musical transmission.[1][2][3]

Thursday: percussion rock in Arnhem

Luxor Live bills Massada as “Latin rock” and “percussion rock,” terms that get close to the band’s central engine without flattening it. The venue describes music rooted in Moluccan mother culture, combining Western instruments, South American rhythms, virtuosity and an eastern temperament. It also locates founder and singer Johnny Manuhutu at the band’s 1970s formation, with a largely Moluccan membership and an unusually extensive percussion section for a rock group. Those details make the Arnhem appearance a chance to hear the rhythmic architecture in its direct concert form.[1]

Massada begins at 19:45 in the Grote Zaal at Luxor Live on Thursday. This is the first stop, and the clearest entry point for listeners drawn to a band history that has carried Latin-rock force, funk-adjacent drive and layered percussion through several Dutch music eras. The billing supplies a single-artist focus before Sunday opens that sound into a wider conversation.[1]

Sunday: a jam built around transmission

At Paradiso, the context changes. Super-Sonic Jam’s September 20 edition expands an earlier “In the Name of the Moluccan Diaspora” gathering into the Main Hall, bringing generations of Moluccan musicians together around celebration, cultural knowledge and family stories. LEKRANSIRA opens the evening: the family project around singer Julya Lo’ko draws on members of the Lekranty family and other families from Teon, Nila and Serua. Its programme joins inherited lagu-lagu in Malay and bahasa tanah with original songs, singing, playing and dance.[2]

After LEKRANSIRA, guitarist and producer Rafael Devánte Sinay leads a specially assembled Super-Sonic Jam with Massada as guest. Super-Sonic Jazz describes its jams as house-band-centred, fully improvised sessions that invite musicians and vocalists into the room. That format matters here: Massada enters a bill designed for exchange, where its signature blend of percussion, rock and Moluccan influence can sit alongside newer voices and a family-based repertoire. Paradiso’s programme begins at 18:30; doors open at 17:30.[2][3]

A date with historical weight

The theme carries particular resonance in 2026. The Nationaal Archief marks June 22 as 75 years since the Kota Inten arrived in Rotterdam with the final large group of Moluccan KNIL soldiers and their families; across February to June 1951, around 12,500 Moluccans were transported to the Netherlands in twelve voyages. Paradiso frames its September programme as recognition of that history alongside the music, family knowledge and artistic voices developed since. The weekend’s value lies in hearing those frames connect through living performers, in two very different Dutch rooms.[2][4]

Start at Luxor Live, Arnhem, on Thursday, September 17 at 19:45 for Massada’s concert, then head to Paradiso, Amsterdam, on Sunday, September 20 at 18:30 for Super-Sonic Jam with Massada, LEKRANSIRA and Rafael Devánte Sinay. Paradiso lists a separate advance food ticket for Moluccan food by Nessie, which requires a valid admission ticket as well.
