The Breaks are a New Orleans-rooted instrumental funk and soul-jazz trio: guitarist Eddie Roberts, Hammond organist Robert Walter, and drummer Stanton Moore. The immediate reason to pay attention lies in the debut’s provenance: the group recorded it across four days at Marigny Studios in New Orleans, then carried that compact organ-trio setup from club bills to Fuji Rock Festival.

A trio assembled around shared mileage

The Breaks formed in 2025, drawing Roberts from The New Mastersounds, Walter from The Greyboy Allstars, and Moore from Galactic. Their first announced performances came as two February 2026 Denver co-bills with George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners at Cervantes’ venues. The first release campaign introduced “Hasheesh” as the lead single; the self-titled Color Red album followed on May 1, 2026. Walter framed the connection as years of musical history among close friends, a useful clue to why the trio’s format arrived fully formed.

One debut, several useful entry points

2026 — The Breaks (Color Red Music): This is the group’s foundational release and, so far, its only album-length statement. Its eight-song program centers Roberts’ guitar, Walter’s Hammond organ, and Moore’s drums, with the label placing the trio in the lineage of late-1960s organ groups and boogaloo. Jazz24 heard New Orleans-driven drums under gritty organ and melodic guitar, while describing the record as a meeting of three established bandleaders. That framing matters for a prospective attendee: the record treats the trio itself as the main event, with every player carrying melodic and rhythmic weight.

“Hasheesh” supplies the clearest opening chapter. Relix described the track as an upbeat funk piece whose solos pass among the three principals, supported by saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and congas. “Snowballers” keeps the core trio in view as a second early single and album track. “Party Like a Rich Kid,” the final pre-album single, expands the palette through Brad Walker on saxophone, John Michael Bradford on trumpet, Big Sam Williams on trombone, and Pedro Segundo on percussion. Across those releases, the change comes through arrangement scale: a lean organ-guitar-drums engine can open outward into a horn-led ensemble passage while the three leaders remain at the center.

The guest list and the label connection

Roberts produced the album, handled the mix, and worked with tracking engineer Rick Nelson, overdub engineer Mike Napolitano, and mastering engineer Doug Krebs. Walter’s Color Red imprint released the record. The credited guest roster adds Segundo, Walker, Bradford, and Williams, with the horn players especially audible on “Party Like a Rich Kid.” Those credits make the project feel less like a side billing and more like a deliberately produced trio record with selective New Orleans-scale color.

What the live record actually shows

The live history is brief but specific. The Breaks’ first announced run placed two February 2026 co-headline dates at Denver’s Cervantes venues; a later calendar put the group at Toulouse Theatre for an official Goose afterparty on April 22. New Orleans then appeared repeatedly in the schedule: an April 27 set at Bayou RenDAZEvous, followed by Tipitina’s on May 2. That makes three documented New Orleans-area appearances across eleven days. The group also held a July 26 Fuji Rock Festival slot in Japan, evidence of festival placement alongside club-scale work. Published reports focus on instrumental material such as “Hasheesh,” “Party Like a Rich Kid,” and “Offsides,” emphasizing funk, jazz, fusion, and arranged horn support.

The fall route reaches Chicago

The latest release remains The Breaks, issued May 1, 2026 through Color Red. A fall U.S. run begins with September festival activity and moves through California, Colorado, Chicago, the Northeast, and Washington, D.C. CrowdMate’s upcoming Chicago listings fall at Garcia’s on November 15 and November 16, 2026. Garcia’s schedule identifies three performances across those two nights: two on November 15 and one on November 16. Gordon Sterling and the People join the East Coast leg as support.
